Armen Agop - Taking Time

Ten years after the first exhibition, Armen Agop exhibits again at Flora Bigai Arte Contemporanea.

The Egyptian artist, both a sculptor and a painter, chose Pietrasanta to work and live. He developed his studies on the matter, a dark granite, not only coming from distant lands but also full of history and meaning. It is evocative and only apparently minimal. His sculptures seek a meditative approach. Indeed, taking the time, walking around and changing the point of view of the artwork is necessary to understand the art of Agop.

In the exhibition, designed according to the gallery space, Agop proposes three large granite sculptures on perfect, but not regular, circular shapes. Next to the black granite there is also a white bronze and a dark triptych. In Agop's work sculpture and painting talk to each other. Mantra, a series of ten painting exhibitions on display with different shapes and sizes, are all linked to a strong passion for detail. Agop states: “In the beginning I was more focused on sculpture, however I have always drawn and painted, but without needing to share it with others”.

The artist interviewed by Luca Beatrice, curator of the exhibition, says: “I think that what unifies sculpture and painting is time, and time elapsed is equal to the first element, granite. My work consists of the time shared with the work; granite needs a long working time, and I felt the same feeling with painting, maybe I exaggerated, but the time spent with the work is more important than the result. It is an obsessive process that seeks light in total darkness ".
